The Best Mother’s Day in NYC!

I had a truly memorable Mother’s Day this year!  My husband and son took me to the New York Botanical Gardens (NYBG) for the annual Mother’s Day Garden Party.  If you’re looking for a unique, peaceful and inspiring way to spend time with your mother, try this event next year for Mother’s Day!

My silly son and I at the New York Botanical Gardens for Mother’s Day.

I absolutely love NYBG!  The gardens are spacious, the grounds are beautifully maintained and there are many varieties of plants and flowers.  There is a children’s garden with plenty of activities to keep the kiddos occupied while you take in the views.

International culture can be found anywhere.  Even at the NY Botanical Gardens!  Enter in Kimchi Taco.  Kimchi Taco serves up traditional Mexican dishes with a Korean BBQ slant and boy is it good.

My favorite and, in my opinion, the most unique dish on the menu, was the Spicy Korean Rice Gnocchi.  The dish had the perfect chewy texture expected of gnocchi with a crunchy outer shell.

There were several other food trucks:  Gorilla Cheese NYC, Coolhaus, for gourmet ice cream sandwiches, and a pizza truck.  In addition to the food and flowers, there was live music, activity rentals to enjoy with the kids (kites, croquet, and hoola-hoops) and live  theatrical performancs.   Lastly, if you used Mastercard to pay for your ticket, you receive a ticket for free entrance back to the gardens during the month of May.  The New York Botanical Gardens definitely knows how to treat the mothers!  Can’t wait to return!

Culture Weekend Staycation:
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage

Originally inducted by Congress in 1978, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month  (APAHM) commemorates the many contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Island Americans have made to the United States.   The month of May was selected for APAHM because during this month in 1843 the first Japanese immigrants came to America and, in 1869, Chinese immigrant laborers completed the transcontinental railroad in America.

AsiaPacific_map

Asia-Pacific encompasses the entire continent of Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia  and Polynesia separated by the Pacific Ocean. To some, Asia-Pacific includes all Asian countries and the Pacific Islands. Think Russia (Northern Asia) and Middle Eastern countries (or Western Asia).  Other sources, consider Eastern Asia (to include Southeast Asia) and the Pacific Islands as the Asia-Pacific.  Based on either definition, there are in excess of 50 countries in the Asian-Pacific region.

For this week’s Culture Weekend Staycation:  Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we will explore as many diverse cultures as possible that represent the vast region of Asia-Pacific.

Day 1 :  Saturday May 18th, 2013

For our day out, the main event of the day is the 34th Annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival.  The festival features performances by a myriad of Asian-Pacific cultural groups.  Check out their schedule of events.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival
Confucius Plaza in Chinatown
Division St. b/n Bowery & Market St.
New York, NY
Festival starts @ 10:30am, ends at 6pm

Following the festival, we’ll grab dinner at New Malaysia Restaurant in Chinatown.

New Malaysia Restaurant
46-48 Bowery
(Btwn Bayard & Canal St)
New York, NY 10013

Day 2 :  Sunday May 19th, 2013

For the at home portion of our Culture Weekend Staycation APAHM, we’ll enjoy our traditional dinner and a movie.  This week’s movie is The Overture a movie from Thailand that is based on the life of Luang Pradit Pairoh (Sorn Silapabanleng), a revered traditional Thai music master who lived during the reigns of Kings Rama V to VIII.

For our dinner, now that the weather is warming up, it feels appropriate to have a Polynesian style ceviche.  The recipe I chose for this weekend is Poisson Cru (or Tahitian Marinated Fish) courtesy of SailingLinks with Sweet Potato Wedges or Kumara in New Zealand from All Recipes Australia.

I hope that you enjoy this Culture Weekend Staycation: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage!  Stay tuned for our June series of weekend destinations in the greater New York area!
